“Rice is the heartbeat of Malaysian kitchens. On average, each Malaysian consumes about 76.7kg of rice a year,” said Dr. Nur Firdaus Mohamed Yusof, Head Agronomist of BERNAS’ Farm Management Department, in an interview with The Malaysian Reserve (TMR). Yet Malaysia currently produces only 60% of what it consumes, down from previous levels of 70%. The balance depends on imports, a reliance that became painfully clear during past crises.
